Painting and sculpture in Antwerp, the 19th and 20th century. Because Brussels was not only the political and economic capital of modern Belgium, but also the cultural capital, a history of modern art in Brussels would not make sense, but a history of the Antwerp art world of the 19th and 20th century to me seems to make sense. Not only because the modern Antwerp art world had a hard time comming to terms with its glorious past, but especially because Antwerp artists, critics and collectors did not know how to deal with modernism.
